Christmas Eve is quickly approaching all of us, and for some it is already here. Each year I get the greatest thrill in watching how all types of people celebrate Christmas. It's amazing to me that so many believe that they are so different from families on the other side of the world. I can tell you from being the voyeuristic man that I am, watching closely to see if every one is naughty or nice that is, that all families pretty much share the same qualities. They love their families, they want nothing more than to see them happy and healthy and most have hope that there will peace all around the world one day soon. I would like to share with you how Christmas is celebrated in a few different parts of the world:

On the west coast of Africa, in Liberia, most homes have an oil palm for a Christmas tree, which is decorated with bells. On Christmas morning, people are woken up by carols. Presents such as cotton cloth, soap, sweets, pencils, and books are exchanged. Also in the morning a church service is held in which the Christmas scene is enacted and hymns and carols are sung. Dinner is eaten outdoors with everyone sitting in a circle to share the meal of rice, beef and biscuits. Games are played in the afternoon, and at night fireworks light up the sky.

In Alaska children wander from house to house carrying a colored star on a long pole, and singing carols.

In Australia, a traditional meal includes a turkey dinner, with ham, and pork. A flaming Christmas plum pudding is added for dessert. In the Australian gold rushes, Christmas puddings often contained a gold nugget. Today a small favor is baked inside. Whoever finds this knows s/he will enjoy good luck. Another treat is Mince Pies.

In Nova Scotia, Canada: during the twelve days of Christmas small groups of belsnicklers, or masked mummers, appear in neighborhoods, ringing bells, making noise, seeking candy or other treats. The hosts may try to guess who the mummers are and if they guess right the mummer removes his or her disguise and stops making rude noises and actions. Children may be quizzed by the mummers on their behavior if they say they have been good they are rewarded with candy.

In Egypt: On the Eve of Christmas everyone goes to church wearing a completely new outfit. The Christmas service ends at midnight with the ringing of church bells, then people go home to eat a special Christmas meal known as fata, which consists of bread, rice, garlic and boiled meat.

In Ethiopia Christmas day is January 7, so on Christmas Eve the city is crowded with pilgrims from all parts of the country. They remain outdoors all night, praying and chanting. In the morning, a colorful procession makes its way to a nearby hilltop where a service is held. Three young men march at the head of the crowd, lashing whips from left to right to keep the people in line. Those who worship are fed with bread and wine that has been blessed by priests. After the service is over the rest of the day is spent dancing, playing sport and feasting.

In Greece: On Christmas Eve, groups of people gather around the holiday table. Figs, dried on rooftops are served with the spicy golden Chrisopsomo bread. As people are they greet one another by saying Hronia polla or many happy years. The table filled with food may include such dishes as kourambiethes, a Greek nut cookie.

They send Christmas cards in Hong Kong. Many of these cards are exquisitely decorated to show the artistic side of the people who might be gifted. These cards consist of the Holy Family in a Chinese setting. Poinsettias and Nativity scenes decorate homes, churches and other public places and ideographs show the Chinese alphabet on streamers and paper chains. Santa Claus also known as Lan Khoong or Dun Che Lao Ren with his reindeer, are a surprising addition to the Far Eastern Scene.

In India, the poinsettia is in flower and so the churches are decorated with this brilliant bloom for the Christmas Midnight Mass. They give presents to family members and baksheesh, or charity, to the poor people.
In South India, small clay lamps are placed on the rooftops and walls of their houses at Christmas, just as the Hindus do during their festival called Diwali.

In Iraq: On Christmas day a bonfire is built in the church. While the fire burns the men chant a hymn. The long Christmas service always ends with the blessing of the people. The bishop reaches forth and touches a member of the congregation with his hand, putting his blessing upon him. That person touches the one next him, and so on, until all have received "the Touch of Peace."

Christmas in Ireland lasts from Christmas Eve to the feast of the Epiphany on January 6, which is referred to Little Christmas. Ireland's Christmas is more religious than a time of fun. St Stephen's Day, the day after Christmas, is almost as important, with football matches and meetings going on. For children, the Wren Boys Procession is their big event. Boys go from door to door with a fake wren on a stick, singing, with violins, accordions, harmonicas and horns to accompany them. The reason for the ceremony is to ask for money 'for the starving wren', that is, for their own pockets. Children often put out Christmas sacks instead of stockings.

It is tradition in Ireland to leave mince pies and a bottle of Guinness out as a snack for Santa. (You Should Take Note of This...Hint, Hint :-)

Midnight mass in Malta on Christmas Eve is the climax of all religious activities. The whole family attends and everyone wears new clothes. The mass begins with choirs singing carols in Maltese. The highlight of the mass is the reading of a story of the nativity by a ten-year-old boy. After Mass it is customary to greet Il-Milied It-Taijeb which is Happy Christmas, to all who attend.

In Mexico the children receive gifts. On Christmas day they are blindfolded and taken to try and break a decorated clay pinata that dangles and swings at the end of a rope. Once the pinata has been broken, the children clammer to recover the candy that was inside the pinata. Those children who have been good also on January 6th receive a gift from the Three Wise Men. Mexicans attend a midnight mass service which is called la misa del gallo or "the rooster's mass," and at the mass they sing lullabies to Jesus.

In Sicily the Sicilians fast from December 23rd at sunset to the December 24th at sunset. They then have a great Yule log which is kindled. After prayers and songs are done around the Presepio or crib the feast begins.
The foods that might be served are eels and larks, boiled pasta, fish, sweet bread and Torrone a type of nougat.

In Venezuela, It is a custom to attend at one of nine carol services. Firecrackers explode and bells ring to call worshippers from bed in the predawn hours. The last of the masses takes place on Nochebuena de Navidad Christmas Eve. Families attend a mass on this night and then return home to a huge and fancy dinner.
On January 6th when the children awaken they will discover that the straw that they had left beside their bed the night before has gone and in its place are gifts the children know that the Magi and their camels have been and when they go to look in the mirror if they have a black smudge on their cheek they know that Balthazar, King of the Ethiopians has kissed them whilst they slept.

I wish for each of you the one thing that so many search for and only a few ever find, peace and contentment in your heart and soul for the rest of your lovely days here in this beautiful place called Earth.

the terrible war going on in Uganda. He has also given happiness and
hope and joy to all of his fans with his music and his tours.

Kelly Clarkson-She is so amazing in using her fame to
do good. She donated over 300 dollars to a hurricane benifet auction

it. In her name, her fans have given over $15,000 to March of Dimes.
Kelly is an ambassador for MOD. She is also responsible for Operation
Thankful, which sent thousands of copies of her debut CD overseas to
our soldiers for free. Around Christmas a few years back, she noticed
that the mall's tree with names of kids who needed presents was full-no
one was interested. So instead of spending her evening having a good
time, she bought gifts for each and every child on that tree.

She is a saint. She deserves this more than anyone.

president. I know Hollywood do not like him but if people open their eyes and

finisher on American Idol in 2003, Clay has done nothing but support various
charities, go on tours, record albums, write a book, ambassador for
UNICEF and even start a foundation, Bubel-Aiken. He just seems to look at
the whole picture before making rash decisions, and right or wrong he
seems to totally stand-up for his beliefs. He takes risks, and most of
all he has the best rapport I have ever seen between fans and an artist.
His fans really adore him; and yes, he appeals to all age groups, which
I think is a good thing. I think Clay should be at the very top of the
"Nice List".

everyone I know. He is all about the inclusion of children and adults who
are disabled with the children and adults who are not. He is the most
unselfish person I have ever seen. He traveled to Uganda and Banda Aceh

wonderful man. He has his Bubel/Aiken Foundation to help kids with
special needs, and he is so generous with his time to benefit Unicef and
other charities as well.

In my book, Clay Aiken should be the # 1 role model
for kids 1 to 92! Not only is he the best vocalist/performer to come
along in years, he refuses to sing songs or make music videos that
advocate drugs, sex or violence. He realizes how music influences people of
all ages, especially our youth, and wants to be a good role model. He has
established the Bubel Aiken Foundation, a charity that works for the
inclusion of children who have disabilities into the same life
experiences as those who do not. He was named the Ambassador of Education for
UNICEF. In that role, he toured post-tsunami Indonesia to see what was
needed for the children in that area. He also toured northern Uganda to
report on what the children of that civil war-torn country were having to
endure. The handprints that he donated to Ronald McDonald House raised
$16,000 for that charity. The donation of his Emmy Awards Red Carpet
attire raised $29,000 for "Clothes Off Our Back."

He has been voted "Most Loved Reality Star" and "Best Mannered
Celebrity." He's just an all around, really nice guy!

Clay has said that he will never stop being a teacher...that becoming a
celebrity has just given him a bigger classroom.

I vote for Clay Aiken for the nice list. He is
the most generous, giving celebrity out there today. His love of
children is unsurpassed and he goes the extra mile to ensure that what he
sings/records is something kids can listen to. He is a UNICEF Ambassador,
has a foundation for special needs children, visits with children in
schools on his off time, not to mention his generosity with his fans,
when he makes personal contact with as many as he possibly can, always
thinking of new ways to do that. He wears his faith on his sleeve, never
trying to hide it to be more accepted in the music world. There are no
airs about him, no matter how successful he is. He's a down to earth
man who loves his Mom and he has pricipals that he sticks to, no
exceptions.

Clay Aiken is especially nice! He visited Uganda and
Banda Aceh as an Ambassador for UNICEF. He acted as the campaign
spokesperson for Treat or Treat for Unicef and visited the school who raised
the most money, In addition, he worked with his own foundation -Bubel
Aiken Foundation-for inclusion of those with disablilities with their
non disabled peers. This foundation recieved a 1.5 million grant from
State Farm and received a 500,000 grant from the US government. He did 2
tours and makes all his tours family friendly. He has been a good man
this year! He also donated his tux, cuff links , and shoes that he wore
to the EMMYs to the Clothes Off Our Back foundation and garnered 27,500
for that cause. What a great guy! Barry-I aso think you are great, but
Clay gets my best man this year.

Hello Again!

They say that "after spending the majority of the year at the North Pole, 25-percent of the Santas surveyed plan to head to South Florida after the holidays, followed by Mexico (15%) and Colorado (10%). Other hot spots of those Santas surveyed include Shreveport, Louisiana (5%), Flagstaff, Arizona (5%) and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (5%). Santa doesn't take a long vacation. A few days off and it's back to the North Pole.

Who did they talk to? It certainly wasn't me...I LOVE vacations and take them as often and as long as I can! Since I hired that new Elf Elessar Elanessë, I can afford to relax a little and enjoy the finer things in life. See I found that the secret to success is, know what you do well and give the other stuff to someone else. Elessar does a fantastic job, I can even see him moving up to a red suit one day. Not mine of course, but a little short pair...he'll be my minney me.

Ok back to the article, they say that Judging by the amount of wrapping paper used to wrap all the good boys' and girls' gifts, it seems there will be more "nice" boys and girls than "naughty" this year. Seventy-five percent of the Santas surveyed expect to use more than 30-million square feet of wrapping paper. That's enough wrapping paper to cover 700 football fields.

What GREAT news, always love to hear that Nice is outdoing the Naughty! Speaking of the Naughty, I have a few more comments from you out there about what some of these celebrities have been up to this past year.

In a day and age where Celebraties get caught up in their " status" It
is refreshing to know a celebrity who isn't into the superficial. For
years, Tony Orlando has been involved in helping Jerry Lewis with
Muscular Dystrophy. For about ten years, he has served as host of the New
York segment of the telethon. For the past two years, he has served as
Vice President of MDA. Tony also has been involved in Veteren's efforst.
Perhaps becuase of Tie a Yellow Ribbon, he has spent a large portion of
his free time, to veteren's issues. Every year, he opens his theater in
Branson , MO to any veteren and their family, for free. He puts toether
a three hour show, dedicated to the veteren's. Every year, he also
meets with Vietnam POW's for a yearly reuinion. These are guys who were
there at the Rose Bowl in 1973, when they were welcomed home, and Tony and
Dawn sang Yellow Ribbon for them. Tony has also been involved in
helping out with mentally challanged inviduales, and with with efforts to
prevent cruelty to animals. Many of Tony's fans know him personally and
can verify that he never brags about any of his volunteer work. He is a
true unselfish, giving individual, asking nothing in return. He once
said that he thinks a person blessed with fame, should give back for what
they have been given. Therefore, Members of Tony's Troops would like to
nominate him for the nice list!!!

For having the courage to protect the bozos who think up websites like this one and for making freedom possible for 45 million people in the mideast.

Well RH, I was going to let everyone else out there choose who is on the Naughty/Nice list this year, but I may reserve a spot just for you on the Naughty list for the Bozo comment. I may wear red clothes, a big floppy hat and have rosy red cheeks, but I asked the Mrs. and she said that I do not resemble Bozo the clown one little bit!

Just an a Quick Update:

Hundreds of votes are coming in and Jingles and Jingle-Gella-Bella-Stella are working their little fingers as fast as they can, counting and sorting to get a clean and accurate vote. One thing that you can do to help us out would be:

1. Please send only one vote per celebrity (we have been getting some ballot stuffing and we are only counting one email per celebrity).

2. When you write the celebrities name in for the Nice or Naughty list, please write their name in first and then the "Why" you chose them...this will help us find who you are voting for right off the bat without having to read the whole message.

Apologies for taking so long to give you the latest scoop! Things are pretty hectic up here in the North Pole today...I have all the elves scrambling around, loading the sleigh for Saturday nights run, exercising the reindeer to make sure that they are ready to fly on the BIG night, the Mrs. had to sew up the back end of my jolly red suit (split the seams out from all those cookies and candies I ate this past couple of weeks...Food is the thing around here this time of year) and most importantly, I have a third of my Elves tallying up the votes that you folks are sending us for my 2005 Christmas Nice/Naughty List. I want to give you a BIG THANK YOU for helping me with this task again this year...don't know what I would do without you!
